What value does a backlink from a .edu site have?

Well this is the question I had in mind when I was going through some link building strategies. I stumbled on Eric Ward’s article .edu Link Fallacies Explained, where he talks about getting links from .edu sites.

.edu links definetly have a higher value than a normal TLD’s. Any link that is obtained by manipulation(hint:student pages on edu sites) will eventually be weeded out by the search engines however I doubt if they do it right now.

If you are wondering why such a wierd title for this post, just out of curiosity I did want to find out how many people are searching to figure out the .edu backlinks for a website. I was amazed to look at what came up, when I did a search using the Overture Keyword Tool

Try searching the pharse “.edu” on the overture keyword tool

Well I am not done yet. Now I did want to figure out how to find just the .edu backlinks to any given site. Here is the command that you need to use on yahoo

linkdomain:www.domainname.com +site:.edu

Leave me your comments if you find this useful:)
