Keywords and Links - Lifeblood of Search

People search using “keywords” or “keyphrases” and follow “Links” on the web to get the information they need or buy a product they want. Your website is always a click away be it any form of advertising on the interenet. And search contributes to about 40% of internet ad spend according to Internet Advertising Bureau.

Though the tech geeks, design freaks and the marketing nuts have a different view and say in getting a website done, what do the search engines really care? Keywords and Links. Search engine look at each one of your web pages and score your pages by the content of the page and use Keywords or Keyphrases as an identity for your web page.

There was a time when you could have a website with just good content and get ranked on the search engines. However people started abusing it and search engines had to look at other ways to combat the misue of the system. So search engines started giving value to links that point your site. A link pointing to your site is considered as a vote of quality for your website content.

However people started to abuse the system again with reciprocal linking, triangular linking, pyramid linkings and such. So the search engines are tuning up their algorithms constantly to deliver the right content to the search users. From my experience I would say Google places a lot more value on links than Yahoo and MSN. Still you will need some good content on your site.

Irrespective of whether people abuse the system or not, links are going to be a major factor in getting your website ranked and will go a long way in your search marketing success if you do it the right way.
