Competitive Intelligence Services vs Web Analytic Tools

Rand Fishkin over at SEOMOZ has conducted a survey of 25 search marketing blogs and done an analysis of the website traffic data with the traffic data from traffic prediction services. First off organizing something of this sort and all the 25 participants who had given access to their data owe a big thanks.

Onto some tidbits from the analysis

1) Most of the search marketing blogs seem to get their traffic from social bookmarking and social networking websites and the feed readers. Search seems to be a minority contributor for traffic to the search marketing blogs. Sure an irony as Rand calls it.

2) August showed up as a high traffic month for the blogs while it was kind of sluggish traffic month for rest of the web. Were all the website owners reading up the search marketing blogs to figure out how to get traffic for their website during sluggish months?

3) Most of the tools that claim to predict traffic for a website arent able to live up to the real data, and interestingly the ones that were not portrayed as traffic prediction tools seems to match up better.

Though Rand’s analysis says the competitive intelligence tools used in the analysis are not that good at predicting traffic, I think the competitive intelligence tools that give the referrer and keyword information are a real killer.
