Marketer or Programmer - who is better when it comes to search?

Well there are programmers without the marketing expertise that excel in search marketing and there are marketers without any programming experience who do a great work. However someone who has understands both worlds has a definite advantage in search marketing over the long run.

Recently Scott Smith was interviewed by Aaron from SEOBOOK and there are some good things to pick up from the interview. Scott comes from a marketing background, understands programming and picked my interest on some of these points

“Obviously, you can put sites up and make money without knowing much about any of that stuff. But those who know both tech and marketing have what I perceive to be an obvious advantage. “

“But sometimes it helps to draw conclusions, and then behave in accordance with an assumption, for simplicity’s sake, if the assumptions lead a team to the place you want to go.”

At first sight the above statement might look as though it defies logic. But when Scott gives the example of how search engine algorithms could be working to arrive at the rankings makes sense. Looks like the right choice in hindsight.
